  • All students can achieve and meet high standards that will result in college and career success.
  • Student developmental needs can be best met by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.
  • School counselors must lead by example, advocate for students, and collaborate with fellow educators to create high academic rigor and allow each student opportunities for self-directed growth and learning
  • The SMS school counseling program is best planned, managed, delivered and evaluated by licensed professional school counselors in an effort to maximize student achievement.
  • Student data must be analyzed and translated into goals that guide and promote student achievement.
  • SMS school counselors will make decisions based on the highest ethical principles as adopted by the American School Counselor Association's Ethical Standards for School Counselors in order to promote the maximum development of each student.

Glossary of Services

Consultation: Helping children develop to their fullest potential is best accomplished when people work together.  For this reason, the counselor consults with teachers and parents to plan appropriate services for every child.

Group Counseling: In some instances, students help each other by working in small groups with leadership from a counselor.

Classroom Guidance: The school counselor meets with classes to help students learn specific information about themselves and their development.  Lessons are focused on a student needs assessment given at the beginning of each school year.
