What do you do when you don’t know the meaning of a word(s)?
- Go to a translating website
- Use a handheld translator
- Look for another person who speaks that language and ask them a question
- Ask the person to repeat, or say it again
- Ask them to speak slower
- Use a dictionary and search for the word
- Use a thesaurus to find synonyms you understand
- Reread the sentence so I can relate the words I know to the word I don’t know to figure it out (context clues)
- Ask the person who says the word, “What does that word mean?”
- Ask them to draw a picture of the word
- See if the word is the same or similar to a word in your native language (cognates)
- Ask my teacher
What do you do when someone doesn’t understand you?
- Use hand gestures or sign language
- See their facial expression of confusion
- Use different words, or describe it
- Repeat
- Talk slower
- Annunciate each word
- Draw a picture
