Beliefs
The School counselors at Sycamore Middle School believe:
- All students can achieve and meet high standards that will result in college and career success.
- Student developmental needs can be best met by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.
- School counselors must lead by example, advocate for students, and collaborate with fellow educators to create high academic rigor and allow each student opportunities for self-directed growth and learning
- The SMS school counseling program is best planned, managed, delivered and evaluated by licensed professional school counselors in an effort to maximize student achievement.
- Student data must be analyzed and translated into goals that guide and promote student achievement.
- SMS school counselors will make decisions based on the highest ethical principles as adopted by the American School Counselor Association's Ethical Standards for School Counselors in order to promote the maximum development of each student.
Mission
The Sycamore Middle School's Comprehensive School Counseling Program will provide support for all students by promoting and facilitating their academic, personal/social and career development as the students prepare for high school, college, and careers.
Vision
As the result of the implementation of Sycamore Middle School's Comprehensive School Counseling Program, all students will be academically prepared, well-adjusted members of society, lifelong learners, and productive citizens.
Glossary of Services
Consultation: Helping children develop to their fullest potential is best accomplished when people work together. For this reason, the counselor consults with teachers and parents to plan appropriate services for every child.
Group Counseling: In some instances, students help each other by working in small groups with leadership from a counselor.
Classroom Guidance: The school counselor meets with classes to help students learn specific information about themselves and their development. Lessons are focused on a student needs assessment given at the beginning of each school year.
Individual Counseling: The school counselor provides individual sessions for students to assist with a variety of educational and personal concerns.

- Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across their life span.
- Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college.
